One thing I'd suggest is experimenting with different mounting surfaces, since the material makes a huge difference to the sound. I've found that even changing the panel thickness or adding a bit of damping can noticeably improve the overall tone. Looking forward to hearing how yours turns out.

Mostly noise (S/N) which is definitively better, particularly at larger gains.It's also USB-C (running at 12 MBPS) so everything is on the board. It doesn't have a monitor because I never added one (cost overruns and such).And now my Apple Watch has conked. How am I going to tell the time now?

One thing I'd add is to leave a bit of room in your budget for future upgrades instead of spending everything on one component. A solid motherboard and quality power supply can make upgrading later much easier, and don't forget to check RAM compatibility before you buy.
