Real-Time Visual Filter Lenses – Exploring the Feasibility

Note: I posted an earlier version of this idea a while ago, but I've refined the concept and rewritten it to focus more clearly on the engineering problem. The previous post is set to private, so this is an updated public version.

 

I've been thinking about a real-world problem: digital filters and effects can dramatically change how we perceive a scene, but they only exist after capture—on a phone or camera. There's currently no feasible way for a person to experience those visual transformations LIVE, with their own eyes, while walking around.

 

This led me to wonder whether a lightweight(the weight of a common sunshade) wearable optical system could apply real-time visual transformations to incoming light – not adding virtual objects, just modifying contrast, exposure, color balance, tint, saturation, or stylish effects at the user's discretion.

The idea is similar to computational photography, but applied to human perception: capture the incoming light, process it through a small onboard system, and display the modified scene to the user as quickly as LIVE can.

 

Existing products like Snap Spectacles, Ray-Ban Meta, and Xreal Air show parts of this direction, but none apply LIVE filters to the real world itself.

I'm curious how feasible this would be from an engineering perspective – especially regarding latency, transparency, display brightness, and keeping the system lightweight enough to feel like normal sunglasses. 

 

I'd love to hear thoughts from anyone who has experience with optics, displays, or real-time image processing.
