I’m doing some research on DIY garage flooring and trying to figure out what actually matters most before starting.
From what I’ve read so far, surface preparation seems to be the biggest factor. Grinding or properly etching the concrete, removing oil stains, fixing cracks, and making sure there isn’t a moisture problem all seem more important than simply choosing the most expensive epoxy.
I’ve also been comparing different coating systems. Some use epoxy for the main coat and then add flakes and a clear topcoat. For garages with sunlight exposure, a polyaspartic clear coat seems to make more sense because of the better UV resistance.

Has anyone here installed a similar system themselves?
I’d be interested to know how long yours has lasted and whether you would choose epoxy again.

One thing I underestimated at first was how much the final result depends on the entire coating system rather than just the epoxy itself. Surface prep seems to be the biggest factor, but coverage rate, recoat timing, and the type of clear topcoat also matter a lot.
I’ve been reading through some of the application information from Bond Craftor, especially their epoxy flooring products and polyaspartic topcoat options:
For my project, I’m currently leaning toward a gray epoxy base, a light flake broadcast, and a clear polyaspartic topcoat rather than a heavy full-flake system.
I’d still be interested to hear from anyone who has lived with a similar garage floor for a few years—especially how it holds up around hot tires, sunlight near the garage door, and normal tool/storage use.

Yeah, I’ve actually been looking into this lately. I used to think the epoxy itself was the main thing, but the more I read, the more it seems like the concrete prep is where most people go wrong. I’ve been checking out a few guides, including some stuff on yourHomify, and the advice about grinding, cleaning out oil, and dealing with moisture keeps coming up.
I haven’t done a full garage floor yet, but I’m leaning toward epoxy with flakes and a polyaspartic topcoat. Seems like a good balance if the garage gets some sun. Would definitely like to hear from someone who’s had theirs for 3–5 years though, because that’s the part you don’t really get from the installation videos.
