ASUS A15/A17 Motherboard – Shorting Pins 5 & 6 to Simulate Power Button?

Hi everyone!

I'm hoping someone here with more experience with laptop motherboards can help me confirm something.

I saw someone posting in an ASUS thread about the A15/A17 power button, where they mentioned that pins 5 and 6 can be shorted to simulate pressing the power button, with pin 6 being ground.

I'm looking at doing this on my broken laptop because I can't currently afford to buy a replacement keyboard or have it taken to a repair centre. I have a multimeter, so after work I'm planning to check the pins and confirm that I'm getting around 3V and that everything looks correct.

From my understanding, I would then ground one probe and briefly touch pin 5 with the other probe to simulate pressing the power button.

Does that sound correct, or am I misunderstanding something?

I saw that Hardware Perks recently released a video about using laptop motherboards without keyboards and how to power them on, which is what got me looking into this further. From my research, this seems like it might be the best option for my situation, but I'd really appreciate some confirmation from someone more knowledgeable before I try it.

I'm about to try something like this soon to get my all in one build moving forward... when i purchase the items, im going ot have to figure out booting the device outside of the case.... I have an ASUS TUF Gaming A17 laptop FA706IHRB... so i think that fits into the laptop model your asking about... im going to try it out this weekend so ill defintely come back on here and post it

Okay i just did it today on my laptop.. for reference, i have an Asus TUF Gaming A17 FA706... At first i checked the voltage of each pin with the battery out, keyboard ribbon plugged out and the charger plugged in... Its a 36 pin connector... Most of the pins carry 0.2, then go back to 0.1 Pin 5 carries 3.2-3.5 volts, Pin 19, and pin 21 carried a fluctuating amount that always fluctuated within 1.2-1.5, then 2.2 to 2.7... Pin 5 is the only one you need to mess with.. bridge pin 5 with a ground connector briefly and that should do the job.. thats what i did to boot mine up.. I think the TUF A17 and A15 family uses just pin 5 to power it on.. you shouldnt need to touch pin 6 at all... see if you can use a needle or a pin to connect pin 5 to a ground very briefly and that should be enough.
