I work in retail (B&M, Dartford), and part of my job involves moving heavy roll-cages from the warehouse onto the shop floor. These cages can get very heavy when fully loaded, and the warehouse is usually fine – wide space, predictable movement, and no customers.
The shop floor is a completely different environment: narrow aisles, unpredictable customer movement, and people suddenly appearing from side aisles. When a roll-cage is full, staff often have to pull it while walking backwards or sideways because pushing it blocks forward visibility. Walking backwards with a heavy load presents genuine safety risks.
This made me wonder whether a slow-speed, assisted or remote-controlled roll-cage could make shop-floor movement safer. I'm imagining something that moves at walking speed, has automatic braking or obstacle detection, and reduces strain and collision risk.
I'm not in a position to prototype anything by myself yet, but I'm curious how feasible this would be from a DIY engineering perspective.
