So I've made this shelf. And obviously don't have the tools etc. to make this. Can anyone point me in the right direction where I can upload this? Also, wood is very expensive, is there an alternative material I can use?
The width overall is 125cm and the height 71.5cm
Not quite sure what you mean by "where can I upload it?"
When you say wood is expensive - what sort of timber are you thinking of using? Materials like pine are not terribly expensive but you can get stuff like "blockboard" which is nasty but cheap. The problem is you need to cap off the cut sides as you would have to with plywood.
The cheapest material is probably MDF but that produces a lot of toxic dust (with a potential to cause lung cancer).
Contiboard a (trademark I think) is usually MDF or chipboard covered in a plastic laminate which gives the appearance of real wood but that costs more (I question if it's good value myself but that's just me).
Looks like all you need for that is a small router (which you can hire) a saw bench and (ideally a circular saw - for straighter cuts) and a drill.
Take everything I say with a pinch of salt, I might be wrong and it's a very *expensive* way to learn!
@marcdraco Hi. Thank you for your response. I'll definitely look into these other alternatives.
By upload. I mean are there any online vendors that allow me to upload my sketchup file, so they can source the materials and then deliver it to my door.
With you. I tried this a couple of years back with a guitar design by the amazing Brian May. Although we had permission from the authors to produce a single unit, no one would touch it.
Since these are your own creation you won't hit that roadblock.
The gotcha (isn't there always?) is the cost is kinda... outrageous. Also it depends on where you are in the world. Most large places have CNC machines but they're looking for large orders not small custom designs. We did find one but the cost of a one-off was ludicrous. They explained (I hadn't though of this) that there is considerable manual work required to set up the machines and deliver to your door.
The guitar would have been £1500 (UK) even IF they had accepted the job.
I bought a router and did it myself.
