@wallpaperviking Right now I am a bit stuck re-ordering waiting another fresnel lens and timming belts with rollers from land overseas.

Other than that I am working on focusing mechanism...

Wow!  Looks so in-depth, very impressive!

Have you done a basic test to see what the image looks like with the screen/fresnel combination?  For me, that is the biggest hurdle....

What did you end up using for the imaging "screen"?

Any idea why DIY perks has not released his plans?

Thanks! 🙂

Right now I am using plexi-glass coated with spray frosting. After some experimenting - I found that frosted glass has more refraction artifacts, than plastic.

As for fresnel settup - here Is a quick drawing of my settup:

drawing

Let's get straight to the point, everyone is wondering about this camera: how to avoid concentric circles of fresnel lens?
The camera you are capturing image needs to be focused matted focusing screen, through the fresnel lens. The fresnel needs to be at suffitient distance from focusing screen, to make it out of focus. This distance will depend on camera's sensor size and lens you are using for capture. For me, using Sony RX100V, I found that optimal distance is around 100mm.

As for the lens and front fresnel - the front fresnel lens needs to have shorter focal lenght(250mm in my case) than the lens(300mm for my Industar 37). The fresnel needs to be at fixed distance from the lens, that is equal to focal lenght of fresnel lens(250mm) and they need to move together for focusing.
As a rulle of thumb - the lens focal lenght is distance of the lens, when focused at ∞. Increasing distance between focusing screen and the lens(with fresnel) will focus on closer distances.

Here is a quick test I've did today. You can still see fresnel lens at edges of the image, but it is because I have some light leaks and I need to do some adjustments...

@latfab

Thanks so much for the detailed information, much appreciated!

It seems extremely complex for my tiny little brain, might stick to my reflected version for now...  Still complex but not as much as this... 🙂

Good work, keep it up! 🙂

Focusing mechanism is kinda finished...

360° turn of focusing knob moves focus 36mm, so roughly full 3 turns to focus from infinity to closest focusing distance. The mechanism is real smooth, without any slop or backlash.

It's been a while. The camera is almost finished.
Here is a short of the thing: DIY 40mm ƒ/0,6 - YouTube

Hello, I made my own episcope camera, when people ask what I call I say episcamera

I also made a short documentary called "além do espectro", using it for the interviews. This short won this prize

and will be shown in another festival called NOIA

I really want to thank Matt for the inspiration.

I cannot share the movie here yet due to movie festivals asking for exclusivity and stuff.

But I can share other works I made with the camera:

And here is the camera

The lens is a Charles Beseler 18" (f4.5 I think)

Very well done sir! @diyperks you see this mate?

Take everything I say with a pinch of salt, I might be wrong and it's a very *expensive* way to learn!
