For large amounts of power, you'd usually buy a DC-DC boost (or buck-boost) convertor but when you only need a fiddling amount of current, this clever circuit is quite useful. I've simulated it here in less than ideal conditions but this will give you an idea of what's possible. SPICE simulation is rather more complex and this app by Paul Falstad.

Drop this text into a text file and open it in the simulator and have some fun.

Take everything I say with a pinch of salt, I might be wrong and it's a very *expensive* way to learn!
