Hello,

One of my colleagues had a bird buddy. It is a bird feeder with a camera that will show you the birds who are feeding at your bird feeder. Also the species is determined and will be send to your phone. I don't have 300 euro to spare for a bird feeder but I have an old phone (Samsung S7) that can make pretty good pictures. How can I make my own bird feeder with camera?

Who would like to help me figure it out?

What have I thought of so far?

1. I need some sort of trigger to make a photo. That can be a light sensor or a mechanic trigger that te bird will trigger by sitting on my bird feeder.

2. Then I need something to wake up my phone, go to the camera and make a picture. This is the part where I have no idea what I am doing :S

3. The photo need to be processed by AI software to determine which species it is. I am a Robot Proces Automatisation developer so that won't be a problemen for me.

Who would like to think things over with me via this forum?

Help is much appreciated 🙂

Yours sincerely,

Chris

Just a quick one here. Using an old phone (nice idea that it is for recycling) the shutter trigger is difficult. However it can be done with some @diyperks level of ingenuity.

I'm just shooting ideas here but you can get fairly cheap Bluetooth remote triggers like this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/HITSLAM-Bluetooth-Remote-Control-black/dp/B07L9VQ8T3/r

If that link plays nice of course. I find Amazon a bind like this.

Anyway the "clicker" is a microswitch and that can be activated by a MOSFET switch. This sort of thing is quite easily achieved and all you would need is a detection to trigger the electronics.

Definitely the sort of thing Matt could do IF he has the time! Would be a good project.

Take everything I say with a pinch of salt, I might be wrong and it's a very *expensive* way to learn!
