eGPU with M.2 but the challenge is to make it as portable and easy to connect to a laptop like a docking station

Recent years, the landscape for eGPU has improved a lot with the introduction of various cables and solutions such as utilizing mini PCIE or M.2 or TB3/4. Now such solutions are great but the mini PCIe and M.2 solution are often very janky and bulky solution due to two main reasons:

1. M.2 slots are often at the bottom of the laptop and requires the chassis of the laptop to be removed to make it viable. And even then after implementing as such, the solution would then not be portable anymore defeating the purpose of having a "portable" laptop.

2. The eGPU solutions often requires a large enclosure for both the power supply unit and the GPU which has a large chassis as well for the fan and heatsink.

Common example of such setups are as shown here:

So the challenge here is, would it be possible to design a M.2 eGPU solution that still allows the laptop to easily disconnect and connect like a docking station as well as allowing the eGPU to be small such that we can carry both of the laptop and eGPU together anywhere?

From my investigations, there are several hints around the web that indicates that this might be possible:

For number 1:

A solution such as above uses 2x HDMI to transfer the PCIe x4 link over to the eGPU. One approach might be to use that HDMI as a point of docking for the laptop (perhaps cut the bottom to expose two female HDMI so that the laptop can "dock" into the HDMI slots?)

For number 2:

The link shows some solutions of someone making a tiny handheld eGPU though TB3 based.

I would be curious what you think @diyperks! I believe this would be a great video for everyone as lots of people now are having older laptops that does not have TB3 or newer standards like TB4 in their laptop but are interested to increase its' potentials using a more powerful eGPU without having a non-portable setup.

I have not seen any of such solutions online yet.
