Hello,

I’m curious to know if someone is capable of modifying or creating a tracking device similar to an AirTag that can be securely attached to a parrot’s leg and used to track it in the event it gets lost or flies away from its owner. Has anyone attempted such a project, and if so, could you please share your insights, experiences, or recommendations?

Thank you for your assistance.

Likely to be too irritating to the animal. Yes, we have put trackers on birds (and even bees, yes bees, apparently) but having something like that permanently attached to a leg is not likely to end well and the range is fairly poor (maybe 20M in free air) isn't going to be much help with an animal that can easily move that distance in seconds.

Also parrots have an exceptionally powerful mandibular muscle and a sharp beak which they use to crack nuts. Again, this would likely end poorly.

I can see your concern, but really the best thing to do is to trim the animal's flight feathers so that it can't escape. It's far less cruel and more reliable so your £1000 African grey doesn't fly out the kitchen window.

Take everything I say with a pinch of salt, I might be wrong!
